In y^y' = x, the y' is stuck in a spot you can't differentiate your way out of, so the move is to take a logarithm: the log of a power drops that y' straight down to a coefficient, and y' ln y = ln x is just a separable first-order differential equation. Integrate both sides (the antiderivative of ln t is t ln t - t, a quick integration by parts) and you land on the implicit general solution y ln y - y = x ln x - x + C. The surprise: the original equation is completely lopsided in x and y, but the answer comes out symmetric across the line y = x, and the simplest solution in the whole family is just y = x itself.
