The Number That Equals Its Own Cosine

The Dottie number: punch any number into your calculator, hit cos over and over, and you always spiral in to 0.7390851332... — a single fixed point that every starting value converges to. This video works out why. From the obvious question "what if x = cos(x)?" through cobweb diagrams, the Mean Value Theorem and Banach's Fixed-Point Theorem from 1922, to Lindemann–Weierstrass proving the Dottie number is transcendental — and the quiet story of the professor of French whose name stuck to it. How To Easily Break Math
43K views • 29 days ago
You've been told your whole life you can't divide by zero. But what actually goes wrong if you allow it? Walk through the logical consequences with a classic algebra proof that turns into a chain reaction — one seemingly-innocent step reveals how every number can equal every other number and the whole foundation of math falls apart. Plus what mathematicians do about it (L'Hôpital's rule, the Riemann sphere, projective geometry, wheel algebra). 🎓 I built a completely FREE interactive math site — lessons, practice problems, quizzes, and formula sheets from arithmetic to abstract algebra. Why Is e^π − π So Close to 20?
48K views • about 2 months ago
e^π − π = 19.999... Why is this so absurdly close to 20? Is it a coincidence — or is there something deeper going on? We trace the answer from Archimedes' famous approximation π ≈ 22/7 through error analysis and all the way to Ramanujan's constant and the j-invariant from algebraic number theory. The Paradox That Broke Mathematics

This simple story about a barber destroyed the foundations of mathematics. The Barber's Paradox is more than just a riddle -- it's the glitch that proved logic itself was broken. π⁴ + π⁵ ≈ e⁶ Is Not A Coincidence (Or Is It?)

Is it deep math or just a cosmic accident? The equation π⁴ + π⁵ ≈ e⁶ is accurate to 0.00002. In this video, we investigate this bizarre numerical proximity and what it reveals about the nature of numbers. In this video, we dive into the world of mathematical coincidences, exploring why π and e seemingly conspire to create near-equalities. But What Is ∞ ^ 0

In this video, we will discuss the concept of infinity to the power of 0. Contrary to popular belief, this mathematical expression is undefined, not equal to 1. While some may argue that it equals 1, the general consensus is that it cannot be defined due to the nature of infinity and its properties in exponentiation. Join me as we delve into the intricacies of this concept. ►WEBSITE https://www.brithemathguy.com ►BECOME A CHANNEL MEMBER https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChVUSXFzV8QCOKNWGfE56YQ/join #math #brithemathguy #infinity This video was partially created using Manim. 0 ^ ∞ , It's What You Think

In this video, we explore the perplexing world of zero to the power of infinity. Is it equal to zero or does it approach infinity? To answer this question, we delve into the concept of limits and discuss how they relate to calculus, real analysis, and mathematical foundations. We also examine the properties of limits and apply them to various examples to gain a deeper understanding of this mysterious phenomenon. Along the way, we discover that the answer to zero to the power of infinity is not as straightforward as we might think and requires a nuanced understanding of mathematical principles. ►WEBSITE https://www.brithemathguy.com ►BECOME A CHANNEL MEMBER https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChVUSXFzV8QCOKNWGfE56YQ/join #math #brithemathguy #limits This video was partially created using Manim. 1 ^ ∞, It's Not What You Think

In this video, we explore the concept of 1 raised to the power of infinity. At first glance, it may seem like the answer should be 1, but as we dive deeper into the topic, we quickly realize that it's not that simple. We discuss the limitations of using limits to try and determine the value of 1^infinity and how the traditional definition of exponentiation doesn't allow for infinity to be used as an exponent. We also explore an alternative approach, using logarithms, to try and determine the value of 1^infinity. We show how logarithms allow us to rewrite exponential expressions as a power of the base, and how in this case, 1^infinity can be rewritten as log(1^infinity) = infinity * log(1) = infinity * 0, which is undefined. ►BECOME A CHANNEL MEMBER https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChVUSXFzV8QCOKNWGfE56YQ/join #math #brithemathguy #1^∞ This video was partially created using Manim. You may have been told 0.999... = 1. I've even told you that very fact myself! (Every single calculus class will stick to the fact that .999...=1) But what if we look at things through a slightly different lens? Hold on to your hat and your assumptions, this one is going to challenge what we know. 🙏Support me by becoming a channel member! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChVUSXFzV8QCOKNWGfE56YQ/join Disclaimer: This video is for entertainment purposes only and should not be considered academic. Corrections: 3:28 smaller than every other POSITIVE real number 3:35 smaller than every other POSITIVE real number 3:52 this is essentially redefining the notation for .99... Furthermore, when using this definition/notation the decimal representation for .99... is not unique. #math #brithemathguy #calculus

This is one of my favorite mathematical thought exercises! I promise you'll like it too. The prisoner's dilemma is one of (is?) the most famous examples in mathematical game theory. The game is sort of a paradox since it appears both players would be better of cooperating, yet the best decision (for both players) is to defect (not cooperate)! 🙏Support me by becoming a channel member! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChVUSXFzV8QCOKNWGfE56YQ/join Disclaimer: This video is for entertainment purposes only and should not be considered academic.
